When a friend or family member develops a mental health condition, it's important to know that you're not alone. Family members, caregivers, and loved ones often play a large role in helping and supporting people who experience mental health conditions each year. Many family members and caregivers experience the same thoughts and questions you might be having now.

You may be trying to help a family member who doesn't have access to care or doesn't want help. Or you may want to learn how to support and encourage someone who has been hospitalized or experienced a similar mental health crisis. We realize that the challenges of mental illness do not only affect an individual's family members but also friends, teachers, neighbors, coworkers and others in the community. Whether you're providing a lot of assistance or very little, the information here can help you better understand the issues that you might face.

According to many studies, effectively reducing stigma pointed to one intervention: contact with someone successfully managing a mental illness. To reduce mental illness-related stigma, we need to feel comfortable having conversations about it. It used to be that cancer was “taboo” to talk about, but through open and honest conversations, cancer became de-stigmatized. The more we talk about mental health conditions, the more normalized it becomes. Starting the conversation is the first step.

Our presentations provide the public with the information and resources they need to better understand mental illness, how to recognize early warning signs and connect people with mental health challenges to community resources. Additionally, our community education programs strive to increase public awareness about the challenges of living with a mental illness and reduce stigma. offers community training presentations in an effort to help people grow their understanding of mental health conditions, how to respond to signs and symptoms, practical ways to connect people to mental health resources, and more.

Community education programs are provided at no cost to the public.
